This new backend allows gnus to handle arbitrary sets of messages
spanning multiple groups, even when these groups are from different
backends and different servers. All gnus glue is removed from
nnir (leaving only the backend search functions) and gnus
search-related processing is done through nnselect. In appropriate
places 'nnir' has been replaced by 'nnselect' or 'search'.
* etc/NEWS: Document the change.
* doc/misc/gnus.texi: New documentation for nnselect and update
searching and thread-referral sections.
* lisp/gnus/nnselect.el: New file.
* lisp/gnus/nnir.el: Remove all gnus glue, leaving only searching
capability. Improve documentation strings.
* lisp/gnus/gnus-group.el (gnus-group-read-ephemeral-search-group,
gnus-group-make-search-group): New functions.
* lisp/gnus/gnus-msg.el (gnus-setup-message, gnus-group-news,
gnus-summary-news-other-window): Update to work for nnselect. Fix
gnus-newsgroup-name wrangling.
*lisp/gnus/gnus-registry.el

This replaces the awkward reuse of encode-time to both convert
calendrical timestamps to Lisp timestamps, and to convert Lisp
timestamps to other forms. Now, encode-time does just the
former and the new function does just the latter.
The new function builds on a suggestion by Lars Ingebrigtsen in:
https://lists.gnu.org/r/emacs-devel/2019-07/msg00801.html
and refined by Stefan Monnier in:
https://lists.gnu.org/r/emacs-devel/2019-07/msg00803.html

Most of this change is to boilerplate commentary such as license URLs.
This change was prompted by ftp://ftp.gnu.org's going-away party,
planned for November. Change these FTP URLs to https://ftp.gnu.org
instead. Make similar changes for URLs to other organizations moving
away from FTP. Also, change HTTP to HTTPS for URLs to gnu.org and
fsf.org when this works, as this will further help defend against
man-in-the-middle attacks (for this part I omitted the MS-DOS and
MS-Windows sources and the test tarballs to keep the workload down).
HTTPS is not fully working to lists.gnu.org so I left those URLs alone
for now.

* gnus/nnspool.el (news-directory, news-path): Move here from paths.el.
Don't see a need for these to be autoloaded. This file is the only
place that uses them, to init another variable.

shr-color.el (shr-color->hexadecimal): Add support for color names.
color-lab.el (boundp): Bind float-pi for Emacs < 23.3.
shr.el (shr-insert-color-overlay): Split stuff like "#444444 !important" to find the real colour.

nnimap.el (nnimap-request-group): Use the stored info for the dont-check case.
nnimap.el: Use deffoo instead of defun for interface functions.
gnus-int.el (gnus-request-group): Take an optional `info' parameter.
nnimap.el: Allow nnimap-request-group to do a complete marks sync on `M-g'.
nnimap.el: Get credentials for numerical equivalents of the port numbers.
gnus-html.el (gnus-html-wash-tags): Add support for i, b and u HTML tags.
nnimap.el (nnimap-update-info): Extend the info so that we can set the marks.
nnimap.el (nnimap-open-connection): Fix typo -- should be 'shell, not 'stream.
nnimap.el: Allow PREAUTH nnimap connections to log in without credentials.
nnimap.el (nnimap-update-info): Fix off-by-one error when concatenating ranges when doing a partial update.
gnus-html.el (gnus-html-schedule-image-fetching): Use `url' rather than curl to retrieve images.

nnimap.el (nnimap-wait-for-response): Be a bit more lax in finding the end of the command we're looking for.
nnimap.el: Allow sending \n instead of \r\n on 'shell streams.
gnus-html.el (gnus-html-schedule-image-fetching): Fetch all images in parallel.

Reimplement nnimap, and do tweaks to the rest of the code to support that.
* gnus-int.el (gnus-finish-retrieve-group-infos)
(gnus-retrieve-group-data-early): New functions.
* gnus-range.el (gnus-range-nconcat): New function.
* gnus-start.el (gnus-get-unread-articles): Support early retrieval of
data.
(gnus-read-active-for-groups): Support finishing the early retrieval of
data.
* gnus-sum.el (gnus-summary-move-article): Pass the move-to group name
if the move is internal, so that nnimap can do fast internal moves.
* gnus.el (gnus-article-special-mark-lists): Add uid/active tuples, for
nnimap usage.
* nnimap.el: Rewritten.
* nnmail.el (nnmail-inhibit-default-split-group): New internal variable
to allow the mail splitting to not return a default group. This is
useful for nnimap, which will leave unmatched mail in the inbox.
* utf7.el (utf7-encode): Autoload.
Implement shell connection.
* nnimap.el (nnimap-open-shell-stream): New function.
(nnimap-open-connection): Use it.
Get the number of lines by using BODYSTRUCTURE.
(nnimap-transform-headers): Get the number of lines in each message.
(nnimap-retrieve-headers): Query for BODYSTRUCTURE so that we get the
number of lines.
Not all servers return UIDNEXT. Work past this problem.
Remove junk from end of file.
Fix typo in "bogus" section.
Make capabilties be case-insensitive.
Require cl when compiling.
Don't bug out if the LIST command doesn't have any parameters.
2010-09-17 Knut Anders Hatlen <kahatlen@gmail.com> (tiny change)
* nnimap.el (nnimap-get-groups): Don't bug out if the LIST command
doesn't have any parameters.
(mm-text-html-renderer): Document gnus-article-html.
2010-09-17 Julien Danjou <julien@danjou.info> (tiny fix)
* mm-decode.el (mm-text-html-renderer): Document gnus-article-html.
* dgnushack.el: Define netrc-credentials.
If the user doesn't have a /etc/services, supply some sensible port defaults.
Have `unseen-or-unread' select an unread unseen article first.
(nntp-open-server): Return whether the open was successful or not.
Throughout all files, replace (save-excursion (set-buffer ...)) with (with-current-buffer ... ).
Save result so that it doesn't say "failed" all the time.
Add ~/.authinfo to the default, since that's probably most useful for users.
Don't use the "finish" method when we're reading from the agent.
Add some more nnimap-relevant agent stuff to nnagent.el.
* nnimap.el (nnimap-with-process-buffer): Removed.
Revert one line that was changed by mistake in the last checkin.
(nnimap-open-connection): Don't error out when we can't make a connection
nnimap-related changes to avoid bugging out if we can't contact a server.
* gnus-start.el (gnus-get-unread-articles): Don't try to scan groups
from methods that are denied.
* nnimap.el (nnimap-possibly-change-group): Return nil if we can't log
in.
(nnimap-finish-retrieve-group-infos): Make sure we're not waiting for
nothing.
* gnus-sum.el (gnus-select-newsgroup): Indent.
